Below are links to various sites that give information on newly discovered and more recently extinct species. I collected sites that talk about extinct or newly discovered species from 2000 to 2010. Though, a couple sites mention species in the late 90's. Many of the sites have photos included or links to photos but some are just articles. NOTE - I placed more sites mentioning new species than extinct since nature lovers are more interested in hearing about new species and upset when finding out more have become extinct. Also, newly discovered species are advertised, especially when there are photos or video of an animal. Unfortunately, the many species that go extinct every day are not great news stories or a popular subject. You won't find as many sites talking about and showing photos of extinct species that died off because of the human race. It is great to hear about new species discovered but that does not replace the species gone extinct. Each animal, and plants as well, serves its own purpose in the ecosystem. Some are more important than others but you can't replace what is gone. This aside, I have a hard time believing some reports that say a group of biologists claim to have found hundreds or even a few thousand new species. I hope it to be true more than anyone. However, when there is no scientific evidence, photos or video for the public to examine on each species then I have no proof of the claims made by a group of scientists I never heard of. If the species were discovered over a long period of time then it is more plausable. Remember, making claims can get a name or group name heard. More new species are found in the oceans than on land but if someone says they recently discovered 1000 new species then I want to see the biological and photographic evidence. Of course, this is just my preference. I hope the sites I listed here with information, photos or videos will help people learn and become more interested in protecting the natural habitats and all the wonderful species living in them.
